The folks at the Senator John Warner Maritime Center, which is the home of the replica ship Providence, originally built in the 1760s and captained by John Paul Jones, invited Old Dominion Boat Club members aboard for summer festivities and a tour of the ship. The Providence crew were decked out in seafaring outfits for this historic venture.
The Maritime Center is located on the Potomac River next door to the Old Dominion Boat Club. It has a historic preservation mission and accepts funding for memberships and is listed as a charitable foundation.
The Old Dominion Boat Club was founded in 1880 and won many rowing competitions in the years that followed. In 1947 they started the first high school rowing program in the City and is the second oldest boat club in Virginia.
Tall Ship Providence serves as a floating classroom, concentrating on the role that the Continental Navy played in the American Revolution, and showcases Alexandria’s history as a port city.
