School Notes
The following students have been named to the dean’s list at Savannah College of Art and Design: Kimberly Davies, Mary Hudgins, May Li Lynch and Aubrey Metcalfe Hampden-Sydney College senior Zachary James Madison was inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa, the national leadership honor society. Zach serves as a Resident Advisor, played on the varsity baseball team, and was named to the All-ODAC Academic Baseball Team each of those years. He is a member of the Big Brother Program, the honor society Sigma Tau Delta (English) and Phi Gamma Delta. An English major, he is a graduate of Yorktown High School and is the son of George and Carol Madison.

Stephen Dunn serving with the Joint Force Headquarters is promoted to the rank of major in the New York Army National Guard. Army Pfc. Joshua Caldwell has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Caldwell is a 2006 graduate of Wakefield High School. He earned an associate degree in 2012 from Everest College, Arlington.

Marine Corps Pvt. Mau E. Knight, brother of Darius J. Faison of Gainesville, Fla. and nephew of Marine Corps Sgt. Michael T. Knight of Alexandria, earned the title of United States Marine after graduating from recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S. C. Knight is a 2009 graduate of Pine Ridge High School of Deltona, Fla.

NOVA Labs Sponsors ‘Take-apart’ Day
NOVA Labs threw open its doors on Saturday, May 11, to host a “Take-Apart” day, for the Girls Excelling in Math and Science (GEMS) Club from Langston Hughes Middle School in Reston. The 12 Hughes seventh graders could hardly wait for safety instructions and raced to pick out their pieces of equipment from bins of recycled phones, computers, answering machines and electronic games.

During a Great Falls Little League game on Saturday, May 18, the Adam P. Seymour Foundation donated an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) to the Great Falls Little League as part of the foundation’s commitment to providing AEDs to organizations and schools that do not have the medical device .

Editorial: Remembering on Memorial Day
The sacrifices of those who died in war.
1st Lt. Robert J. Hess, 26, of the Kings Park West neighborhood of Fairfax, was killed by enemy fire on April 23, 2013 in Pul-E-Alam, Afghanistan. Hess was known as “RJ” and graduated from Robinson Secondary School in 2005, where he played football, lacrosse and was the captain of the swim team. He was a U.S. Army Blackhawk helicopter pilot who deployed to Afghanistan on April 11, 2013. His family remembers his sense of humor and his natural leadership ability.

Republican convention selects conservative slate of candidates for November.
Perhaps the biggest sign that the Tea Party has taken control of the Republican Party of Virginia was the yellow Gadsden flag emblem that appeared on placards distributed by supporters of Jeannemarie Devolites Davis, who was one of seven candidates vying to be the nominee for lieutenant governor last weekend at a raucous convention in Richmond. Davis, who represented Fairfax County for a decade in the General Assembly, has a reputation as being a moderate.

Walker Honored by Franklin Band Director Lawrence Walker was at Franklin Middle School when it opened in 1984. And after 30 years with FCPS — 28 of them at Franklin — he retired in June 2012. But his many contributions to the school and to the youth of Fairfax County have not been forgotten. In a ceremony at the May 9 meeting of the School Board, it was revealed that Franklin is naming its music department the Lawrence Walker Music Department. And area music students will still benefit from his expertise when he returns this summer to continue directing Franklin’s annual Band and Orchestra Camp, June 24-July18.

As Congress tries to tackle immigration reform, residents gathered in an auditorium at Kenmore Middle School on Tuesday, May 14, to learn about the various and complex parts of this issue. U.S. Rep. Jim Moran (D-8) started the forum off by speaking of one area of common ground between both sides of the immigration reform debate.

Each year, the Cappies program honors the best in high-school theater, and Robinson Secondary’s high-octane musical, “Hairspray,” has been nominated for eight awards.
